Real Life Case Study
The following was reported by a paediatrician in Cape Town (South Africa) using Sensi:
Mary, aged 5 years, visited her doctor together with her mother due to a cold. She was unaware that she had a heart murmur. After listening to her heart with a stethoscope, Mary’s doctor informed her mother about the murmur. According to him it was normal in young children, in Mary’s case the murmur was just a little too loud and the quality of the signal too harsh. Using Sensi, to evaluate the murmur, he could confirm that it was in fact a so-called pathological murmur i.e. the sound was produced by a small hole between two ventricle chambers in the heart (VSD). This motivated Mary’s doctor to schedule an appointment with a paediatric cardiologist who, not only confirmed their suspicion, but also discussed a procedure to close the hole. Under normal circumstances, without the help of Sensi, he could have diagnosed the murmur as physiological. Untreated this could have resulted in subacute bacterial endocarditis, caused by bacteria, which get into the blood stream, settle and multiply in the heart. Bacteria can get into the blood when teeth are removed or cleaned at the dentist.
